Baytree shortlisted for Used Car Dealer of the Year at the National AM Awards

We are delighted and honoured to have been shortlisted in the Used Car Dealer of the Year category at this year’s AM Awards.

This prestigious national award recognises successful companies that have a comprehensive understanding and innovative approach to used car sales in the automotive industry. Entrants must also evidence high levels of customer satisfaction, demonstrate an enterprising approach  to marketing, whilst recognising the importance of experience, dedication and team recognition, to drive business success.

On receiving the news, our founder Chris McDermott commented, ‘Being shortlisted for this prestigious award is testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire team over the last year, in what has been challenging circumstances. It is an honour to be shortlisted amongst some very worthy competition and we wish all those entrants the best of luck’.

We are looking forward to attending the awards ceremony on 12th May in London.

Celebrating 15 Years – Our Founder Chris McDermott recounts how it all began at Baytree and just how far we’ve come.

This year we are celebrating our 15th anniversary here at Baytree. We’ve come a long way from where we started in 2007.

For the last 9 years we have been serving our customers from our headquarters in Derby and are now the go-to company for prestige and performance cars in the UK.

I set up Baytree 15 years ago, trading cars from a room in my house, following a period at Astle BMW, as Head of business. After turning over £500,000 in the first trading year, I was offered an opportunity to hire a desk at Orchid IT Solutions and bought and sold cars on Autotrader from there. Initially, it was just me with a computer, buying and selling but it quickly expanded to a team of six.

A friend was selling his company while I wanted to expand mine, so he decided to invest in Baytree. Thereafter, an opportunity arose to move to Donington Park race circuit. Our first showroom was on Redgate corner in a tiny office next to the track. We had 20 cars, from BMWs and Mercedes to Audis and Porsches. However, we needed more accessible premises and in 2013 we came to our current site in Derby.

Just when Baytree was at a crossroads as I was setting up the base in Castle Donington, my beloved son Frazer, who bravely fought a brain tumour for 20 years, sadly passed away. We then moved to our current showroom in Derby, we were living hand to mouth, not knowing whether the company would go on, but Frazer’s strength in adversity gave me a real determination to succeed.

The prestige element, which is now a major selling point, began after one contact asked us to sell a Ferrari 458 for £200,000. Thereafter, the supercar market snowballed.

Recent years have seen us expand the number of cars we have on sale as well as developing and expanding our team. We have also seen unprecedented growth during the pandemic due to an uplift in the used car market. Independent dealers like us were able to move quickly to fulfil demand, whilst main dealers struggled to get hold of new stock.

To mark our anniversary and to ensure we can offer our clients as much choice  as possible, we are investing in refurbishing our showroom and increasing our storage facilities. The works are expected to complete next month and will allow us to showcase more vehicles in our showroom, stocking around 120 cars on site.

The expansion will also feature a dedicated handover area that will allow us to add even more pizzaz to those special moments.

I’m very proud of what we have achieved here at Baytree and we are looking forward to what the next 15-years holds for us.

A look back on 2021 and our predictions for 2022

Despite still being in the midst of the global pandemic 2021 was a year of highs for Baytree. From award wins, including ‘Fastest Growing Dealer of the Year,’ and key new appointments to celebrity customers, our feet didn’t really touch the ground. Here we look back on a year that saw us take another step closer to achieving our objective of becoming one of the most successful independent prestige motor dealers in the UK.

2021 Highlights:

Maintaining our core focus on delivering an exceptional customer experience we also increased the number of head-turning cars we hold in stock and now stock in excess of 100 vehicles on site, with capacity for further growth. The business progression saw us enter the top 50 independent car traders in the UK.

We also expanded our relationships with some of the largest vehicle finance providers, offering tailor-made finance packages to suit individual customer requirements regardless of their budget. We offer a fantastic and transparent interest rate which allows our customers to purchase their dream car. All our sales team are SAF (Specialist Automotive Finance) qualified, and we continue to invest in our people by providing continuous training to ensure that all our team are experts in the fields of vehicle finance and insurance products.

In the Autumn we were thrilled to be awarded the ‘Fastest Growing Dealer of the Year’ award, at the Motor Trader 2021 National Independent Dealer Awards. Our founder Chris McDermott also became a finalist in the Derbyshire Business Awards, Entrepreneur of the Year category. These wins built on rave reviews from over 200 satisfied customers across Autotrader and Google giving us a five-star rating.

In October we also welcomed Chris Astle to our team, with the former Head of Business at Stratstone Derby BMW joining us as Operations Director, having spent 35 successful years in the BMW network. Chris is already shaping us for the future by broadening the selection of cars available, focusing on customer retention and loyalty, developing the team, improving systems and process, whilst developing the brand and our aftersales operation.

We were delighted to welcome a number of new clients to Baytree during 2021, one of which was TV personality and car enthusiast Eammon Holmes. Eammon spent time with us talking about all things cars and experiencing our exceptional customer service before driving off in his dream car.

2022 Predictions and Ambitions

2022 will be another year of growth and celebration for Baytree as we look forward to opening our newly refurbished and expanded showroom in the spring. As part of our 15-year anniversary celebrations, our first event will be welcoming SuperCar Drivers to an event at our new facility in April.

We continue to expand our stock base by sourcing selected models from our established network of suppliers and our customer base. We select the cars we purchase to meet our individual customer requirements. We provide a fresh alternative to the franchised dealer network by offering a personal service, dedicating time to provide an exceptional customer experience.

In terms of broader market trends and predictions, it is expected the demand for used prestige and performance cars to continue to increase, as an independent Baytree we are able to move quickly to fulfil individual customer requirements as new car availability remains scarce According to Motor Trader the ongoing semiconductor shortage will continue to affect new car delivery times and prices, forcing  many buyers to the used car market as an alternative. .

We also expect to see more electric vehicles move into the second hand market.

In terms of the new car market, Evo Magazine are predicting an influx of new performance cars for 2022 with Mercedes, AMG, Porsche, Lamborghini, and Ferrari predicted to release new models.

Whatever the year holds we will continue to put our customers first as we continue to make our customers’ dreams come true.

Chris Astle joins our award-winning team

Chris Astle, former Head of Business at Stratstone Derby BMW, has joined Derbyshire-based Baytree Cars as Operations Director.

Chris has spent most of his working life in the automotive industry, including 35 years within the BMW network, where he became affectionally known as ‘The Colonel’.

He now joins former BMW colleague Chris McDermott and Steve Pinchbeck who own Baytree Cars – one of the UK’s leading outlets for high-performance and prestige vehicles.

Chris commented: “I feel honoured and privileged to be asked to join Baytree at this exciting time of development and progression for the business.

“Which has been endorsed recently by winning the prestigious 2021 Motor Trader National Award for the ‘Fastest Growing Dealer of the Year’.

“I have worked with Chris McDermott on two previous occasions in BMW businesses and known and dealt with Steve and the Pinchbeck family over many years.

“When you combine the excellent reputation of the business with the enthusiasm and passion demonstrated by the team, it made my decision to join them relatively easy,” added Chris.

Chris Astle’s relationship with BMW began in 1986 when he joined Bridgegate BMW Derby as Sales Manager, progressing to become Head of Business.

In 1997 he purchased his own BMW dealership in Lincolnshire, adding a second three years later, before selling the business in 2007 following a successful ten-year trading period.

In January 2008 he was then invited to return to Derby to head up Stratstone Derby BMW, part of Pendragon PLC, a post he held until his retirement from that position in August of this year.

Chris added: “I am really excited to have this opportunity and to assist in the development of the business to realise its full potential.

“My role involves the sourcing of vehicles to broaden the selection of cars available, reacting to market demand, developing the team, focusing on customer retention and loyalty, and developing the aftersales operation.

“Working with Chris and Steve gives us a great business dynamic. I feel re-energised and excited at the prospect of helping realise their vision for Baytree to become the ultimate prestige dealership,” said Chris.
